Viana do Castelo to Vila Praia de Ancora 21km

Such a lovely day today in Portugal with fine weather, blue skies and not too much cold or heat, just perfect.

Given my feet issues after so many cobblestones yesterday, I decided to walk the coastal route to save my feet from as many cobblestones as possible. It was a beautiful walk but there wasn’t many way finding points so I did get misplaced once or twice doing some additional walking unnecessarily. I managed to get some help from some fellow pilgrims and managed to find my way. Unfortunately I was unable to avoid the cobblestones completely so am still nursing very sore feet and a very big blister! Ouch! I’ve been adjusting my backpack the past three days to try to avoid any hotspots which started to develop yesterday after the scrambling and cobbles.

By some weird circumstance, even though Valerie and Carine were heading on a different route, somehow we came across each other again in the middle of nowhere. So incredible! We walked together for the last few kilometres and I’m so grateful for their company and Valerie’s quick reflexes as she caught me when I didn’t see a step on the boardwalk! We stopped for a drink and food for me and I was appreciative of Carine’s ability to speak Portuguese and help get me some food! I was starving after very little food in the preceding 24 hours.

The place I’m staying tonight is Casa Da Clo. It’s a family home that’s been converted for pilgrims. The son Jose, manages the business and does a great job. He is Brazilian, as are many living here in Portugal. Food is still challenging for me as gluten free is very uncommon. I’ve utilised the kitchen tonight and made myself some boiled eggs with nuts and dates. And a 1 euro glass of red wine offered by Jose! The town church was still decorated from yesterday’s Corpus Cristie event!

Another big day tomorrow so I’m off to bed with a cup of tea.
